  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup 2% milk (can be substituted with whole milk)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (to sweeten strawberries)
  • Additional fresh strawberries (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Beat butter and 1/4 cup sugar until creamy. Add egg yolks one at a time and stir in vanilla.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl; alternate adding this mixture with milk into the wet ingredients until smooth.
  4. Whip egg whites until soft peaks form; gradually add remaining sugar until stiff peaks form.
  5. Gently fold egg whites into batter and pour into a greased 9-inch round baking pan.
  6. Bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown; cool completely.
  7. Whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  8. Assemble by layering whipped cream and strawberries between cake layers; decorate with additional whipped cream and whole strawberries.
