  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups Manitoba flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Chocolate spread or apricot jam (for filling)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine lukewarm milk, water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour, eggs, egg yolk, salt, and the yeast mixture into a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Knead on low then medium speed for about 6-8 minutes until smooth. Incorporate butter and knead for an additional 3-4 minutes.
  3. Cover the bowl to let rise at room temperature for about 1 – 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Roll out the dough to about 2 cm thick and cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  5. Fry in preheated vegetable oil at 170 -180°C until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Dust with sugar while warm and fill with chocolate spread or apricot jam.
