Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup ice water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 6 to 7 cups sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Mix eggs, ice water, and lemon juice separately; then combine with the flour mixture to form dough.
  2. Divide dough into two pieces, flatten into rectangles, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Toss sliced apples with sugars, cornstarch, spices, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking pan.
  5. Roll out the larger dough piece to fit the pan. Place it in the pan and spread apple filling over it.
  6. Roll out the second dough piece for the top crust; cut vents for steam.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool completely before glazing with a mixture of powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
