  • 1 lb ground beef (or mix of beef & turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley or basil
  • 12 lasagna noodles (cooked al dente)
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Extra Parmesan for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and onion until cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add minced garlic and stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried herbs, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 25–30 minutes.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with an egg and Parmesan cheese; mix until smooth.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Layer the lasagna by spreading meat sauce at the bottom of a baking dish followed by noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until bubbly.
  7. Let rest for 15 minutes before serving.
