Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Bake chocolate cake according to package instructions or your favorite homemade recipe. Once baked, let it cool completely before cutting it into cubes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Use a whisk or electric mixer to whip until soft peaks form.
  3. In your trifle dish or glass bowl, start with a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom. Drizzle with cherry juice from canned cherries or fresh cherries. Add a layer of vanilla pudding on top of the cake. Follow with a layer of whipped cream.
  4. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used up, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  5. Sprinkle dark chocolate shavings over the top layer of whipped cream for an elegant finish. If desired, dust with cocoa powder.
  6. Cover and refrigerate your Black Forest Trifle  for at least four hours before serving to allow flavors to meld beautifully.
